The iPhone’s Impact on Consumers & the Wireless Market

2007 has become the year of the iPhone, a device that accelerated the evolution of consumer thinking about the wireless experience and disrupted the way the wireless industry will do business in the future. To explore this, Compete hosted a panel of telecom executives across the wireless value chain to address the impact the iPhone having on the wireless internet business model.

Featuring senior executives from CBS, Motorola, Yahoo! and loopt, the panel looked at the iPhone’s impact on the wireless industry, both the challenges and opportunities. The panel included:

  • Adam Guy, Moderator – general manager, Telecommunications and Media, Compete, Inc.
  • Sam Altman – co-founder and ceo, loopt
  • Lee Ott – director, Mobile Products, Yahoo!
  • Cyriac Roeding – executive vice president, CBS Mobile
  • David Ulmer – senior director, entertainment products, Motorola

During the panel, Compete released an exciting new study of consumer behavior around the iPhone and other advanced mobile devices. Combining behaviorally targeted surveys and observed online shopping behavior, Compete provided a one-of-a-kind perspective on questions including:

  • Who really wants the iPhone?
  • What do consumers want from their wireless relationship?
  • How does the iPhone stack up to other disruptive product launches (Wii, TMX Elmo, etc.)?
  • Is the iPhone a tide that lifts all ships in the wireless arena?
  • What can be expected from the iPhone this holiday season?
  • Which competitors are the most at risk from the iPhone?

"What's Your Presence Strategy?" - Enabling Next Generation Services

Service Providers can now enhance the value of traditional consumer and enterprise messaging and data services while introducing next generation services such as Instant Messaging, collaboration, and conferencing. While Presence is often associated primarily with IM, recent experience in Europe suggests that Presence coupled with interoperability has even broader application potential as the lynchpin for new services and partnerships that can deliver the ARPU bump service providers seek.

Enterprises and Entertainment Providers need to understand Presence and how it can be utilized to meet the needs and expectations of their customers.

Subject matter experts and doers spoke on what is being delivered today as well as what to expect over the next two to three years as evolving technology and user demand meet in the marketplace.
